Alex Ovechkin Retirement Still Unclear

Alex Ovechkin retirement talk is heating up again, but the Washington Capitals captain said he is “pretty sure” Tuesday’s regular-season finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets will not be his final game. The 40-year-old, who remains the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, said he expects to make his decision in the offseason after weighing his family’s wishes, his health and the Capitals’ direction.

Ovechkin says he is not ready to close the door

Ovechkin made it clear that nothing is finalized yet. Asked directly if the matchup in Columbus would be his last, he said he was “pretty sure” it would not be, adding that he hopes it is not. He explained that he still needs time to sort through the biggest factors in the decision: where the team stands, what his family wants and how he feels physically.

His children, he said, have already started asking whether he is staying or leaving, and they would like him to return. Ovechkin noted that they love Washington, the team and the players around him. He also said he has not yet had a conversation with general manager Chris Patrick about his future, even though he previously said he would decide in the offseason after talking with his family and the Capitals.

When asked what he would like to hear from Patrick, Ovechkin joked that the ideal answer would be a two-year offer and a simple “sign it.”

What the Alex Ovechkin retirement decision means

The central question around Alex Ovechkin retirement is still the same: will he return to Washington or step away after 21 seasons? Ovechkin said he would “probably not” play for another NHL team if he does not come back to the Capitals, leaving open the possibility that his next move could be outside North America.

If he does not return to the NHL, he could play in Russia’s KHL. Ovechkin previously spent parts of five seasons with Moscow Dynamo, including four seasons before he came to the NHL and one more during the 2012 work stoppage.

For now, the Alex Ovechkin retirement timeline remains unresolved. He said the Capitals’ ability to reach the postseason and contend for the Stanley Cup will matter in his thinking, along with family and health. That makes this more than a personal decision; it is also a reflection of where Washington is as a team.

Season stats and milestone chase

Ovechkin’s 21st NHL season ended with him playing all 82 games for Washington. He finished with 32 goals and 32 assists, giving him another productive year even as the retirement conversation intensified.

He also closed the season with 929 career goals in 1,573 games. That total came after he passed Wayne Gretzky last year to become the NHL’s all-time leader in regular-season goals. Even at 40, Ovechkin continued to add to a record that once seemed unreachable.

  • Age: 40
  • Games played this season: 82
  • Goals this season: 32
  • Assists this season: 32
  • Career goals: 929
  • Career games: 1,573

Farewell moments, but no final answer yet

The uncertainty around Alex Ovechkin retirement created emotional scenes in Washington’s final two games. During the Capitals’ home finale against the Pittsburgh Penguins, fans chanted “one more year,” and the team honored both Ovechkin and his long-running rivalry with Sidney Crosby through video tributes.

After the game, Crosby’s Penguins were ready for a postgame handshake line with Ovechkin, but the Capitals star waved them off because he had not decided on his future. Ovechkin later said he appreciated that they were waiting for him.

On Tuesday in Columbus, the building where he first faced the Blue Jackets as an NHL rookie in October 2005, visiting Capitals fans again made their feelings known. They chanted for “one more year” and cheered him throughout Washington’s win, giving the veteran another reminder that his decision matters far beyond the locker room.

Carbery reflects on Ovechkin’s legacy

Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said he still cannot fully grasp what Ovechkin has accomplished over the past three seasons, especially given how he has continued to defy the odds at his age. Carbery also praised Ovechkin’s personality and daily enthusiasm, saying those traits have been as memorable as the goals.

If this season does end up being Ovechkin’s last in Washington, Carbery said that is what he will carry with him for the rest of his life. For now, though, the final answer on Alex Ovechkin retirement is still pending.
