McDavid Hat Trick Powers Oilers Past Sharks

The latest McDavid hat trick reminded the Edmonton Oilers why Connor McDavid remains the league’s most dangerous game-breaker. On Wednesday night in San Jose, he scored three times and added two assists in a 5-2 win over the Sharks, helping Edmonton bounce back from a frustrating overtime loss at Utah one night earlier.

The victory pushed Edmonton into sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division, a timely surge as the regular season enters its final stretch. For the Oilers, it was another sign that their late-season form is trending in the right direction after an uneven year.

McDavid Takes Over Early

McDavid wasted little time making an impact. He opened the scoring on a power play during his third shift, then set up Vasily Podkolzin for another man-advantage goal late in the first period. From there, the game tilted firmly in Edmonton’s favor.

He added two more goals and an assist in the opening sequence of the second period, finishing with five points for his 15th career hat trick. For anyone asking how many hat tricks Connor McDavid has, the answer is 15 in the regular season after this performance. It was also his second five-point outing in a short span of elite play, and one of the most complete performances of his season.

Coach Kris Knoblauch said the Oilers needed McDavid to lead the response after a disappointing result the night before, and he delivered on every shift. Edmonton has been short-handed at times, and McDavid’s ability to control the pace continues to separate the Oilers from most of their opponents.

Sharks Get an Early Answer, Then Lose Control

San Jose briefly grabbed a 1-0 lead when Macklin Celebrini scored on the power play. That set up a marquee showdown between two Canadian Olympic teammates and Hart Trophy contenders, but McDavid answered less than two minutes later and never let the Sharks settle in.

Celebrini admitted afterward that McDavid’s speed and separation ability make him extremely difficult to contain. The Sharks had no real answer after the equalizer, and Edmonton’s top line kept generating pressure throughout the night.

Evan Bouchard summed up the approach simply: when McDavid is in that kind of rhythm, the Oilers want the puck on his stick as often as possible. That was exactly the formula Wednesday, and it worked from the opening minutes onward.

Division Race Tightens for Edmonton

The win moved the Oilers to the top of the Pacific, two points ahead of Vegas, though the Golden Knights still held a game in hand. Edmonton has now gone 6-1-1 over its last eight games, a run that has revived its division hopes after a season that included plenty of inconsistency.

McDavid’s production has been central to the push. He now has 133 points, which leads the NHL scoring race by six points over Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov in the Art Ross Trophy chase. It is the second-highest point total of McDavid’s career, behind only his 153-point season in 2022-23.

He is also within reach of another milestone. With three games left, McDavid needed three more goals to reach 50 for the second time in his career. Even so, he made clear that team goals matter more than individual benchmarks as Edmonton tries to secure its playoff spot.

  • McDavid scored three goals and added two assists for five points.
  • The performance was his 15th career hat trick.
  • Edmonton beat San Jose 5-2 and took first place in the Pacific Division.
  • The Oilers have gone 6-1-1 over their last eight games.
  • McDavid entered the night with 133 points, leading the Art Ross race.

Edmonton’s Playoff Push Continues

After reaching the Stanley Cup Final in each of the past two seasons, the Oilers have not always looked like a team ready to repeat that level. But McDavid said the group believes its best hockey is still ahead, and the recent results support that view.

There is also optimism that Leon Draisaitl could return from injury in time for the postseason, which would give Edmonton another major weapon as the playoffs approach. For now, the Oilers are focused on finishing the job over their final three regular-season games and locking in their postseason berth.

McDavid’s message was straightforward: the individual numbers are nice, but the bigger priority is getting Edmonton back into the playoffs and building momentum at the right time. Based on this McDavid hat trick performance, the Oilers look like a team peaking when it matters most.
