John Carlson Joins Ducks in Trade from Capitals

The Anaheim Ducks made significant moves on Thursday, March 5, 2026, notably acquiring veteran defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals, a move that promises to bolster their defensive lineup. Earlier in the day, the Ducks also secured a four-year contract extension with speedy forward Ryan Poehling, showcasing their intent to strengthen the team's roster.

At 36 years old, Carlson was in the concluding year of his eight-year contract with the Capitals, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $8 million. The trade to Anaheim did not involve salary retention and the specifics regarding a potential contract extension with the Ducks remain under wraps. Notably, Anaheim was not listed in Carlson's 10-team no-trade clause, facilitating the trade process.

The compensation for Carlson includes a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 or 2027 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in 2027 heading to the Capitals. The conditionality of the first-round pick is intricately structured; if the Ducks fail to make the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, they will keep their 2026 first-round pick and instead transfer their 2027 first-round pick to Washington. Additionally, Anaheim retains the option to choose which year's first-round pick to transfer based on their playoff qualification status.

Carlson's addition significantly enhances the Ducks' right side of the defense, aligning him with Jacob Trouba and captain Radko Gudas. This trio collectively brings a wealth of playoff experience, having participated in a combined total of 267 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Trouba has reached three Conference Finals, Gudas was a part of the Florida Panthers' run to the Cup Final in 2023, and Carlson secured a Stanley Cup victory in 2018 with the Capitals.

"John Carlson brings leadership, character, a high hockey IQ, and a commanding presence to our lineup," expressed Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek. "Securing a Stanley Cup winner like Carlson is a significant addition to our team as we push towards the playoffs."

Carlson's role as the Ducks' top right-handed defenseman is expected to have a profound impact, particularly on the power play and penalty kill units. His knack for executing precise outlet passes aligns well with Head Coach Joel Quenneville's strategy, emphasizing fast-paced, rush-based attacks.

Throughout his tenure with the NHL, Carlson has established himself as one of the league's premier defensemen, concluding his Capitals career as the franchise leader in games played, goals, and points among defensemen.

While it remains uncertain whether Carlson will make his Ducks debut in the upcoming game against the MontrΓ©al Canadiens, further updates are anticipated following the team's morning skate.
